Record Snowfall In Juneau

Juneau Alaska Winter - Photo (c) Laurent Dick - Wild Alaska TravelJuneau digs out from a record breaking snowfall over the weekend. The National Weather Service says eight-and-half inches of snow fell at Juneau International Airport over the 24-hour period that ended at midnight on Sunday. That broke a record of 6.3 inches of snow set back in 1946. The skies were clear on Monday to welcome to Alaska Governor-elect Bill Walker and Lt. Governor-elect Byron Mallott  for Inauguration Day.

Juneau Alaska Juneau Icefield Aerial Photograph - Photo (c) Laurent Dick - Wild Alaska TravelNice to arrive back in Juneau with a ceiling high enough to enjoy a bird’s view of its gorgeous location, nestled between the ocean and the Juneau Icefield. My only concern is the lack of snow on Eaglecrest!

Denali Heli Hiking Adventure

Heli-Hiking Adventure Denali National Park - (c) Laurent Dick - Wild Alaska TravelIt’s been great to be back in the Denali National Park area. This past weekend,  I was fortunate to join my friend and former neighbor Jeffrey Ottmers, owner of Denali Backcountry Guides, on of one of the heli-hiking adventures he guides near the boundary of Denali National Park. Jeff is a world-class naturalist who loves to share his passion for the tundra, and it was wonderful to learn more about the ecology of this amazing place through him.

Juneau – The Most Beautiful Capital City In America

Alaska's Capital City Juneau from Mount Troy - Douglas Island - Photo (c) Laurent Dick - Wild Alaska TravelI don’t know of any other capital city in the United States that has such a dramatic setting like Juneau, Alaska’s capital city. Old-growth groves and glaciers lie within the municipal limits, snow-capped mountains loom overhead, and whales and other marine wildlife are a short boat ride away. On a clear day, it’s truly a stunning place. No wonder that over one million cruise ship passengers will visit Juneau this summer. A cruise ship is actually visible on the lower right hand corner. Our house is located just beyond the Juneau-Douglas bridge.
