Gastineau Channel, Mendenhall Wetlands and Juneau Airport

Gastineau Channel Mendenhall Wetlands Juneau Airport - Photo (c) Laurent Dick - Wild Alaska TravelIt’s easy to get used to the summer-like weather in Juneau. Mostly clear skies and warm day have been the norm over the past few days. I am sure it won’t last forever. This view is from above the Mount Roberts trail looking back at Gastineau Channel and the Mendenhall Wetlands, the Juneau International Airport and Fritz Cover, with the Chilkat Mountains in the distance.

Northern Lights over Southeast Alaska

Northern Lights Over Fritz Cover Juneau - Photo (c) Laurent Dick - Wild Alaska TravelThe northern lights dance above Fritz Cove and the Chilkat Range in this view from North Douglas at at 3:30 AM yesterday. The aurora was so massive at times that even my fisheye lens couldn’t capture its full magnitude.

Top of Mount Troy

Florian Wade and Aubrey Hekkers on Mount Troy - Photo (c) Laurent Dick - Wild Alaska TravelFlorian and his friend Aubrey Hekkers celebrate their climb to the top of Mount Troy on Douglas Island on a gorgeous spring day yesterday. I was very impressed how well those two boys did, especially on the long ascent. The downhill ski was much faster and more fun. In the background is the mainland with downtown Juneau.

Break Up In Alaska

Break up Braided Rivers Alaska - PhotoThe meaning of ‘break up’ in Alaska has nothing to do with personal relationships. It’s all about the arrival of warmer weather and winters own agonizingly slow release on the landscape. It is one of the most hopeful times of year, the promise of green-up and summer just around the corner. Here, open water is visible along the Harlequin River near Yakutat in Southeast Alaska.

Copper River Delta from the air

Copper River Valley Aerial - Photo (c) Laurent Dick - Wild Alaska TravelOne of my favorite flights in Alaska is the flight from Anchorage to Juneau by way of Cordova and Yakutat. On a clear day, so many incredible landscapes and patterns are revealed, like here the braided Copper River weaving its way to the ocean near Cordova.
