The Island Within

When I saw this island at the entrance of Long Bay in Tenakee Inlet during our hunting trip, I thought almost immediately about Richard Nelson’s book ‘The Island Within’. One of the gifts of the book is how it offers a fresh look at how a human being can relate to his world. Nelson argues convincingly that people have the greatest sense of the land, the greatest sense of spiritual connection, when they subsist from the land on which they live. Spending again some time on the land and hunting for deer as a means of acquiring food for my family, I couldn’t agree more with him.

Winter Has Arrived In Southeast Alaska

Winter has arrived with a bang in Southeast Alaska. Schools were closed in Juneau because of the recent snowfall, and here in Tenakee we are anticipating at least another foot of fresh snow overnight. This doesn’t prevent us from going hunting though, and Gary Hedges, Sean McKeown and I have explored a lot of gorgeous country over the past few days. Here, Gary’s 16-foot Klamath plows through slush ice in Long Bay off Tenakee Inlet.
