Sea kayaking Mendenhall Lake

Greta, Florian and I recently did sea kayaking trip to the terminus of Mendenhall Glacier. Mendenhall Lake and Mendenhall Glacier are definitely jewels that are located right in our backyard.

Northern Lights Over Mendenhall Glacier

Northern Lights over Mendenhall Glacier - Photo (c) Laurent Dick - Wild Alaska Travel             The Northern Lights were at storm level this past weekend, the skies over Juneau were clear and I happened to be able to catch a glimpse of it all!

Alaska Glacier Adventure

Best Adventure In Alaska Mendenhall Glacier Experience - Photo (c) Laurent Dick - Wild Alaska TravelJuneau climber Franz Mueter examines his rappel route down a moulin from deep inside the Mendenhall Glacier. It’s definitely an amazing and humbling experience to stand inside a glacial cavern. However, any adventure into Alaska’s glacial (under)world should only be attempted by experienced people with the appropriate gear and who understand all the risks involved. Also, moving around under thousands of pounds of glacial ice in sometimes narrow and constricted spaces is not for those who are claustrophobic.

One Of The Coolest Adventures In Alaska

Coolest Adventure In Alaska - Photo (c) Laurent Dick - Wild Alaska TravelRappelling deep into the heart of a glacier must be one of the coolest adventures in Alaska! Here, my friend Franz Mueter rapels into a moulin in the Mendenhall Glacier yesterday. How cool is that? By the way, a moulin is  a cylindrical, vertical shaft that extends through a glacier and is carved by meltwater from the glacier’s surface.

Glacial Reflections

We all react to glacial patterns in our own way. To me, it’s abstract nature is hauntingly beautiful. It provides a unique though fleeting window into our world and myself. It’s white and blue, pure and true, frozen but alive.

Skijoring On Mendenhall Lake

Skijoring is a winter sport  in which a dog pulls a cross-country skier. The cross-country skier provides power with skis and poles, and the dog adds additional power by running and pulling. Here, our yellow lab Bay pulls Florian across frozen Mendenhall Lake on a magical Christmas day, with Mount Wrather looming above Mendenhall Glacier in the background.

Winter Solstice In Juneau, Alaska

Happy Winter Solstice from Juneau!  For those Alaskans deprived of daylight, this is a welcome turnaround point, as from now on the days will slowly get longer.  This shot was taken at 2:30 PM, with the low angle sun illuminating the terminus of the Mendenhall Glacier. The glacier’s eastern margin reveals a huge cave and is an area of great instability, so please be careful out there!

Alaska's Mendenhall Glacier In The Winter

A giant iceberg we named ‘Tugboat’ still rests on firm ground at the terminus of the Mendenhall Glacier. It will be interesting to follow its journey after it peels off the face of the glacier and starts floating in the lake, continuing the eternal cycle of creation, destruction and renewal.
