Sea kayaking Mendenhall Lake

Greta, Florian and I recently did sea kayaking trip to the terminus of Mendenhall Glacier. Mendenhall Lake and Mendenhall Glacier are definitely jewels that are located right in our backyard.

Pond Hockey At Its Best

The Most Beautiful Hockey Rink In The Work - Mendenhall Lake -- Photo (c) Laurent Dick - Wild Alaska TravelIt’s tough to beat these clear days with perfect ice conditions. Since I made the front page of the Juneau Empire, the phone has been ringing off the hook. NHL scouts from around the country have shown interest. The choices are tough. Should I go to Montreal, Boston, or perhaps Detroit? Considering how much fun I have had the past few days, I think I will stay in Juneau!

The Most Scenic Outdoor Hockey Rink In The World

The Most Beautiful Hockey Rink In The Work - Mendenhall Lake - Photo (c) Laurent Dick - Wild Alaska TravelOver the past few days Mendenhall Lake definitely lived up again to its reputation. Perfect ice conditions and gorgeous weather created what I consider the most scenic outdoor hockey rink in the world. I can’t imagine any more beautiful place to play pond hockey than here.

Skijoring On Mendenhall Lake

Skijoring is a winter sport  in which a dog pulls a cross-country skier. The cross-country skier provides power with skis and poles, and the dog adds additional power by running and pulling. Here, our yellow lab Bay pulls Florian across frozen Mendenhall Lake on a magical Christmas day, with Mount Wrather looming above Mendenhall Glacier in the background.

Bullard Mountain Reflection

Bullard Mountain is reflected in a pool of open water along the shore of Mendenhall Lake. I was happy to catch a few fleeting sun rays break through winter’s icy touch and illuminate the landscape for a brief moment. It was a nice reprieve from the cold breath of winter that has been blowing across much of Southeast Alaska this past weekend, bringing more snow and locally high winds.

Mendenhall Lake Freeze Up

The ponds & lakes around Juneau are again frozen solid, though not quite as smooth as in years past. But I am looking forward to a great weekend of pond hockey! On sunny days like yesterday it’s easy to understand why Juneau is considered Alaska’s healthiest place to live.

Nature's Raw Power

Shattered lake ice as a result of 30-40 mph winds is stacked up like a deck of cards along Mendenhall Lake. The devastation of unprecedented scale brought about by superstorm Sandy with sustained winds of up to 80 mph served as a reminder of the incredible power of nature. The storm, as New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, was proof that “nature is an awful lot more powerful than we are.”  In our technological age that’s something easy to forget.

Mendenhall Lake Freeze Up

Shattered ice from a recent wind storm lines the shoreline of Mendenhall Lake. The cold weather has accelerated freeze-up of lakes and ponds to the point where we already got to enjoy some pond hockey.
