Alpenglow On Mount Iliamna

Mount Iliamna - Photo (c) Laurent Dick - Wild Alaska TravelThe morning sun illuminates Mount Iliamna, elevation 10,016 feet, in this view from near Homer. Fumaroles located at about 8,990 feet elevation on the eastern flank of this glacier-covered stratovolcano produce nearly constant plumes of condensate and minor amounts of sulfurous gases. These plumes are quite vigorous and have resulted in numerous pilot reports and early historical accounts of “eruptions” at Iliamna Volcano.
