Harbor Seal, Auke Bay

A Harbor Seal pops its head up to breathe in Auke Bay, surrounded by a maze of large ice cakes that have formed during the recent cold spell. I was rather surprised to be watched for once. Below, the jigsaw puzzle of ice cakes at sunset.

Juneau Pack Ice

This close-up view of pan ice in the Mendenhall River is reminiscent of the broken up sea ice I have seen in Norton Sound in Northwestern Alaska. The scale is different, but the pattern are the same.
