Dawson City – Heart of the Klondike

This damaged building in Dawson City shows what can happen when the warm interior of a building causes the permafrost underneath to thaw. Below, and aerial view of Dawson City, which at the end of the 19th century was known as the ‘Paris of the North’, when prospectors from all over the world came here to find their fortune. With a population of 30,000 people it was the largest city west of Winnipeg and north of Seattle. Today, the population is less than 1,500. Dawson City is the halfway point in the Yukon Quest. Here, mushers must take a mandatory 36 hour layover. Hugh Neff, who arrived here first, will be able to leave on Thursday morning at 3:35 AM, with Hans Gatt close behind at 6:36AM.
