Spring Skiing On Douglas Island

Pittman Ridge Eaglecrest Douglas Island Spring (c) Laurent Dick - Wild Alaska TravelAbove, looking back at my ski tracks, coming off the East Bowl at Eaglecrest on Douglas Island earlier this week. The mountains of the mainland are in the far distance. Below, the view from the top of Pittman’s Ridge across Stephens Passage to Admiralty Island.

Fog Lifting Over Douglas Island

Upon my return from northern Alaska, I  have been enjoying several really gorgeous fall days in Juneau this week. On one of those days, I biked up Eaglecrest access road and reached Pittman’s Ridge right as the fog was lifting over Douglas Island, revealing all the peaks and glaciers on the mainland. What a beautiful day to stand on top of a ridge!

Alpenglow Over Coast Mountains

The last sun rays of the day illuminate the Coast Mountains yesterday afternoon in the view from Pittman Ridge at the top of the Eaglecrest Ski Area on Douglas Island. The top of the Ptarmigan chair lift is visible on the far right. It’s wonderful to witness alpenglow colors again – it’s been a while!

Magical Winter Day In Southeast Alaska

Yesterday was simply a gorgeous winter day throughout Southeast Alaska. Greta, Florian and I went back to Eaglecrest for the third day in a row, and it turned out to be the best day skiing we had all winter. An additional six inches of fresh powder snow brought this past weekend’s storm total to 18 inches, and combined with sunny skies, no wind and no crowds, the skiing was heavenly. We skied until our legs burned! This shot is looking northeast from Pittman’s Ridge high up on Douglas Island, across to Mount Troy and Mount Jumbo, and the Coast Mountains on the mainland in the distance.
