Candle Ice, Kluane Lake, Yukon Territory

Candle Ice Kluane Lake Yukon - (c) Laurent Dick - Wild Alaska TravelCandle ice is one form of rotten ice that occurs during spring break-up on rivers and freshwater lakes,  like here along Kluane Lake in Canada’s Yukon Territory. Large chunks break up into vertical fissured slices which are fragile enough to be pulled apart by hand. The chandelier-like strands of ice make a wonderful tinkling sound as they crumble.
