Weird Spring In Alaska

Sailing In Lynn Canal north of Juneau - (c) Laurent Dick - Wild Alaska TravelIt’s been a weird spring over much of Alaska, and calm and warm days like this one in Lynn Canal earlier this month have been few and far in between. Winter is refusing to leave, as this article points out. Hard to believe that in a little over a month the days will start getting shorter again!

Bluekennels Dog Camp On The Herbert Glacier

Aerial view (above) and on the ground (below) of the Bluekennels dog camp on the Herbert Glacier. My friend Sebastian Schnuelle and his crew of five run dog tours up here throughout the summer. Not a bad place to work, wouldn’t you agree?

Sebastian Schnuelle And His Lead Dog Inuk

Sebastian Schnuelle enjoys a special moment with Inuk at Sebastian’s dog camp on the Herbert Glacier near Juneau earlier this week. Inuk was Sebastian’s leader in 2009 when he won the Yukon Quest and finished second in the Iditarod. They have traveled together in more than ten 1,000 mile races. It’s virtually impossible to fully understand the profound bond that the two share.

Sailing Favorite Channel

My friend Sebstian Schnuelle takes his Orca Burger for a spin in Favorite Channel north of Juneau last week. A rare sunny morning lured us out on the water, but by the time we were at Tee Harbor it was overcast and a couple of hours later it started to drizzle. Juneau had measurable precipitation on 29 out of 31 days in May! Below, yours truly sailing Favorite Channel.

Meet Bay – Our New Puppy!

After months of looking, we finally found a little puppy last weekend. Bay is an adorable nine-week old Yellow Labrador puppy full of energy and very, very cute. Florian has been very excited to have her in our lives. He takes her on his walk to school and back every day. Our friend Sebastian Schnuelle from Whitehorse stayed with us this week, and it was neat to see how much fun this Iditarod top finisher and Yukon Quest champion had playing and snuggling with our new puppy. She will grow up fast, so we try to enjoy her puppy stage as much as we can.

Congratulations, 2011 Yukon Quest Champion Dallas Seavey

What a dramatic race the 2011 Yukon Quest was, with an uncertain outcome until the very last miles of this 1,000 mile mushing marathon. In the end, rookie Dallas Seavey of Willow was the first to mush his team under the finish line in Fairbanks, just a few minutes ahead of Sebastian Schnuelle of Whitehorse/Paxson. Congratulations to all the mushers who entered this year’s race. It’s definitely one for the history books! I took this shot of Seavey’s leaders setting the pace at the start in Whitehorse. Below, Sebastian Schnuelle’s team sprints down the starting chute. Sebastian came in second place, only 33 minutes behind Seavey!
