Florian The Tillerman

Florian drives our new skiff along North Douglas on a gorgeous Sunday morning. We had also considered the superyacht ‘Luna’, which was anchoraged at Auke Bay this past weekend. Owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, it features two helicopters, seven smaller boats, a 10-man submarine, a music studio, swimming pool, basketball court, bulletproof windows and a crew of 40. We looked at the ‘Luna’ but then decided to go for a smaller boat instead 🙂 – the Luna isn’t really our style!

Winter Has Arrived In Southeast Alaska

Winter has arrived with a bang in Southeast Alaska. Schools were closed in Juneau because of the recent snowfall, and here in Tenakee we are anticipating at least another foot of fresh snow overnight. This doesn’t prevent us from going hunting though, and Gary Hedges, Sean McKeown and I have explored a lot of gorgeous country over the past few days. Here, Gary’s 16-foot Klamath plows through slush ice in Long Bay off Tenakee Inlet.

Humpback Whale Meets Skiff

A couple of playful Humpback whales dive and surface in close proximity to a skiff in Stephens Passage. This close encounter is an experience that Jim Parise of Juneau and his partially hidden son Matthew will likely never forget. I couldn’t help but be reminiscent of Ishmael and Moby Dick when I saw this scene.
