Eaglecrest Avalanche Control

This weekend’s storm created very dangerous avalanche conditions. Up at Eaglecrest, the ski patrol used explosives to reduce the risk of human triggered avalanches. In this shot of the West Bowl along Hog’s Back taken from Waterfall, a large fracture line is visible where a large slab avalanche was set off by a bomb to clear the area for skiers. No doubt that those skiers crossing the avalanche path in this picture would have set off an avalanche had the slope not be cleared by the Eaglecrest Ski Patrol.
