Early Season Backcountry Skiing At Eaglecrest

Eaglecrest Stephens Passage Admiralty Island - Photo (c) Laurent Dick - Wild Alaska TravelA beautiful sun dog over Stephens Passage and Admiralty Island greeted me at the top of Eaglecrest on Douglas Island on my first backcountry ski tour of the season recently. It was awesome to carve some turns again, even on wind-eroded snow layers!

Killer Whale Patrolling Stephens Passage

Killer Whale Orca Stephens Passage - (c) Laurent Dick - Wild Alaska Travel
Killer whales or orca whales have no natural predators, they are the top predators of the oceans. An adult orca consumes an average of 100-300 pounds of food per day, depending on size and energy needs. Here, an orca patrols Stephens Passage south of Juneau.

Douglas Island Panorama

Douglas Island Panorama from Mount TroyThe weather has been absolutely glorious lately, and the spring skiing has been equally great. I skied to the top of Mount Troy yesterday. This is one of the high peaks on Douglas Island, located almost directly opposite from downtown Juneau. It’s neat to get a different perspective for once, looking  down at downtown Juneau (on the far left). The high peak visible in the center is Mount Jumbo, and the body of water on the far right is Stephens Passage.

The mountains of the mainland are in the far distance. Below, the view from the top of Pittman’s Ridge across Stephens Passage to Admiralty Island.

Icebergs Drifting In Stephens Passage

Several monster icebergs drift in Stephens Passage in a scene that reminded me of seeing the first icebergs when I traveled to the Antarctic continent.

Sunrise Over Stephens Passage

We may not see the sun in the foreseeable future, so I posted this shot taken earlier this year to remind ourselves what a sunrise might look like. It snowed almost throughout the entire weekend and while precipitation at sea level might be in the form of rain this week, up in the mountains the already amazing snow masses will likely get even more impressive.

Sunset Over Admiralty Island

Spending a day in the mountains, high above the clouds, seems to uplift me like nothing else does. It easily makes up for a week of rainy and steel-gray skies in town. Amazing what a little shift of perspective does.
