The Limitations Of Digital Photography

One of the challenges of digital photography is the limited exposure latitude in the highlights. A high contrast scene such as this rain storm with breaks in the clouds over Gastineau Channel and Stephens Passage is a good example. There is a complete loss of detail in the water that looks solid white, and this is something I usually try to avoid. Because if the highlights are blown out, there is no hope for recovering any detail, especially when shooting in JPEG mode. Shooting in RAW will give a fighting chance of bringing back that detail, but it will involve some post-editing in Photoshop. The bottom line is if one starts with a poorly exposed digital file, it’s virtually impossible to improve it in the digital darkroom.

Typical Juneau Fall Weather

We are back in a period of low pressure systems cycling through the Gulf of Alaska. Rain, wind, and no end in sight… This shot is looking towards St. James Bay and the Chilkat Mountains during a lull in the storm system.
