White Pass Area, Alaska/B.C. Border

Heading back to Juneau today on the South Klondike Highway. This view shows the road in the White Pass area near the Canadian Customs station in Fraser, B.C., visible in the bottom left corner. Also visible on the far left are Lake Lindeman and Lake Bennett just to the north, and Windy Arm of Tagish Lake in the upper center.

The Spell Of The Yukon

‘The Spell of the Yukon’ is my favorite poem by Robert Service. Here’s an excerpt that came to mind when driving through the vast open spaces along the Klondike Highway, like here near Windy Arm of Tagish Lake:

There’s a land where the mountains are nameless,
And the rivers all run God knows where;
There are lives that are erring and aimless,
And deaths that just hang by a hair;
There are hardships that nobody reckons;
There are valleys unpeopled and still;
There’s a land — oh, it beckons and beckons,
And I want to go back — and I will.
