Gastineau Channel Sunrise

The sun briefly popped out of the clouds yesterday morning above Gastineau Channel in this view from along Thane Road. I had almost forgotten what the sun feels like – what a great way to start the day!

Gastineau Channel Still Life

undefined

An abandoned boat rests on the shores of Gastineau Channel along Thane Road on the weekend, with Mount Jumbo and the higher peaks of Douglas Island across the channel bathing in the days’ first light. It’s been a wonderful month of March here in Juneau and this image reflects the peacefulness we experienced after the wind events early in the month. Spring is definitely here! Looking at the remains of the boat, I wonder what happened? What is the story behind it? I wished the remains of this still life could speak, or I could find its owners, but they might be gone, and the stories with them.

Juneau Avalanches

We’ve had some pretty high avalanche danger around Juneau this past weekend, which also led to some avalanche control creating some impressive avalanches, like here at the bottom of the famous avalanche chute along Thane Road. A pretty awe-inspiring sight to say the least. It looks like though as the week progresses things should dry out and with colder temperatures the snowpack will get stronger and more stable again. The City and Borough of Juneau does have an avalanche forecast online, and I hope that anybody who ventures into the backcountry checks out this great source of information: http://www.juneau.org/avalanche/

Thane Road Waterfall

I hadn’t been down Thane Road for a long time, so yesterday I went for a short drive to see some of the waterfalls. It always amazes me just how much water is coming down the steep slopes of Mount Roberts, especially after heavy rains. What eventually caught my attention was a little waterfall off the side of the road. The lushness of the area made me think I was in Hawaii, but the avalanche signs along the road brought me quickly back to reality.
