Extreme Fire Danger Across Much of Alaska

Yukon Alaska Forest Fire near Alaska Border - (c) Laurent Dick - Wild Alaska TravelMore than 80 wildfires are burning across  Alaska on Monday, but things could be a lot worse. Despite record-breaking hot, dry weather across much of the state the past week and a half, Alaska has so far avoided having an uncontrollable wildfire near an urban interface. I photographed this fire that is burning near the Alaska-Canada Border in the vicinity of Beaver Creek last week.

Wildfire North Of Fairbanks

undefined

Pushed by strong winds, a wildfire burning northwest of Fairbanks was moving closer Tuesday evening to a subdivision of more than a dozen homes and the trans-Alaska oil pipeline, according to a fire official. The fire began May 30 on the north side of the Chatanika River. By Tuesday, it had moved to within about 2 1/2 miles of the Hayes Creek Subdivision and less than five miles from the pipeline. Over 500 firefighters, aided by firefighting aircrafts, are fighting the fire.
