Eaglecrest Snow Report

For the past few days, I have been watching the snowline slowly creep down the mountains on Douglas Island. Yesterday I decided it was time to get a firsthand look at the snowpack, so I hiked up to the top of Eaglecrest. The snowline started right above the base of Black Bear, and to my amazement I saw a couple of ski and snowboard tracks halfway up Black Bear. There was at least a foot of snow at the top of Ptarmigan, with the trees already bearing a heavy load of wet snow, as in this view near the top of the Black Bear. The ski area is scheduled to open on December 3, but I know that some of us itching to carve a few turns will be up there a lot sooner than that.
